What is National Origin Discrimination?
Race discrimination involves treating an employee (or applicant) unfavorably because of of birthplace, ancestry, culture, linguistic characteristics common to a specific ethnic group, or accent. National origin discrimination may also include treating someone unfavorably because the person is married to someone who was born in another country, or because the person has supported the rights of co-workers who have complained about national origin discrimination.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits national discrimination when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment. It is also unlawful to harass a person because of that person’s national origin, including the use of slurs or offensive remarks.
